CAS Registry Number
A unique numeric identifier assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service to a specific substance, written as up to ten digits in three hyphenated groups with a final check digit. It identifies a substance regardless of naming conventions or language. Different salts, hydrates and stereoisomers usually have separate CAS numbers, so quoting the exact number avoids confusion between closely related materials.
