Excipient
Any component of a medicine other than the active ingredient. Excipients act as fillers, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, coatings, preservatives or solvents, and influence how a dosage form is made, how stable it is and how the drug is released. Common examples are lactose, microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate, usually supplied to pharmacopoeial monographs.
