Heavy Metals
Metallic impurities such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic that are toxic at low levels. Older pharmacopoeial tests measured them collectively as a coloured sulfide precipitate compared with lead. Modern pharmaceutical practice follows ICH Q3D, which sets permitted daily exposures for individual elements measured by ICP-OES or ICP-MS. Reagent specifications often still report heavy metals as lead.
