Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being consumed overall, by providing a lower-energy pathway. Catalysts may be homogeneous, dissolved in the reaction mixture, or heterogeneous, such as palladium on carbon. In pharmaceutical synthesis, residual catalyst metals are controlled as elemental impurities under ICH Q3D.
