Hill Notation
A convention for writing molecular formulas. For organic compounds, carbon is written first, then hydrogen, then all other elements in alphabetical order. If no carbon is present, all elements, including hydrogen, are listed alphabetically. The system gives each formula a single predictable form, which makes formula searching in catalogues and databases consistent. Ethanol, for example, is C2H6O.
