Nitrosamine impurities became a regulatory priority after carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds were found in several marketed drugs. Manufacturers must now assess risk and, where needed, test to very low limits. This sub-category supplies the standards for that work, from piperazine-derived nitrosamines such as 1,4-Dinitrosopiperazine, 1-Ethyl-4-nitrosopiperazine and 1-Cyclopentyl-4-nitrosopiperazine to aromatic ones like 1-Nitroso-4-phenylpiperidine.
Testing typically uses LC-MS/MS or GC-MS at nanogram levels, so standard purity and identity must be beyond doubt. Labs also need isotope-labelled internal standards to correct for matrix effects, which appear in our labelled standards sub-category. Each nitrosamine standard carries HPLC purity and structural data from NMR and MS.
Nitrosamines are potent mutagens, so they are packed in sealed vials inside protective secondary packaging and shipped with an SDS detailing safe handling. Quantities are usually 5 mg to 50 mg. Custom synthesis of drug-specific nitrosamines is available for structures not yet listed.
