Pharmacopoeial monographs name the impurities a method must detect, often by letter in the European Pharmacopoeia or as related compounds in the USP. This sub-category lists those named substances so laboratories can run monograph methods with confidence. Examples include Abacavir EP Impurity B and C, Abacavir USP Related Compound B and C, (R)-Atomoxetine EP Impurity A and (R)-Lansoprazole EP Impurity A.

These materials are used for peak identification, system suitability and method transfer. Where the monograph requires an official pharmacopoeial reference standard for a test, that requirement still applies. Our standards are secondary materials, well suited to development, routine identification and investigations. Each listing gives the pharmacopoeial name, chemical name, structure and CAS number where available.

Each vial is supplied with a COA showing HPLC purity and structural confirmation by NMR and MS. Quantities usually range from 10 mg to 100 mg. If a newer monograph adds an impurity not yet listed, send us the name and we will quote synthesis.

Pharmacopeial Impurities (EP / USP / BP): questions buyers ask

How do EP letter names map to USP related compound names?
The two pharmacopoeias name impurities independently. EP Impurity A of a drug is not necessarily USP Related Compound A, and one may have no equivalent in the other. Always check the chemical name or structure. Our listings show both names where a compound appears in both pharmacopoeias.
Can I use these standards for system suitability tests?
Many laboratories use well-characterised secondary standards for system suitability, particularly during development and routine identification. For official release testing, check whether your monograph or regulator requires the pharmacopoeial reference standard itself. Document the source and characterisation of any secondary standard in your procedures.
What should I do when a monograph is revised?
Revisions can add, rename or remove specified impurities. Review the new text, compare it with the standards you hold, and order any new ones in good time before the effective date. Search our catalogue by the new impurity name or CAS number, or ask us to synthesise it if not yet listed.
