Buffer
A solution that resists changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. It usually contains a weak acid with its conjugate base, or a weak base with its conjugate acid, such as acetate or phosphate systems. A buffer works best within about one pH unit of its pKa. Buffers are essential in analysis, biochemistry and formulation.
