Chelating Agent
A molecule that binds a metal ion through two or more donor atoms, forming a stable ring-shaped complex. EDTA, citric acid and phosphonates such as HEDP are common examples. Chelating agents soften water, prevent scale, stabilise formulations against metal-catalysed degradation and are used in complexometric titrations to determine metal concentrations.
