Organometallic reagents build carbon frameworks that other methods cannot reach easily. This sub-category offers ready-made Grignard solutions such as 1-Naphthylmagnesium bromide 0.25 M in THF and 1-Propynylmagnesium bromide 0.5 M in THF, the Knochel-type base 2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidinylmagnesium chloride, and ligands and precatalysts including 1,1'-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) and its di-tert-butyl analogue.

Buying a commercial solution saves the preparation step, but the titre must be known. Check the stated molarity, the solvent (THF, 2-MeTHF or diethyl ether) and whether the solution is clear or contains precipitate. Many labs titrate on receipt and again before scale-up.

These reagents are air and water reactive, and solutions in ether solvents are highly flammable. How do I check the concentration of a Grignard solution?
Titrate a measured aliquot against a known amount of an indicator such as iodine, or against a dry alcohol with a colour indicator like 1,10-phenanthroline. Run the titration under inert gas. Commercial solutions are made to a stated molarity, but concentration can change over time and after repeated punctures of the septum.
Why is dppf so widely used in cross-coupling?
dppf has a wide bite angle and a robust ferrocene backbone that stabilises palladium and nickel during catalytic cycles. This makes it effective for Suzuki, Negishi and Buchwald type couplings with many substrates. Its bulkier di-tert-butyl analogue suits more demanding aryl chlorides and hindered partners.
Can organometallic solutions be sent by air freight?
Some can, depending on the hazard classes, solvent and quantity per package. Pyrophoric or water-reactive solutions face strict limits and are often restricted to cargo aircraft or sea freight. We check each item against current dangerous-goods rules and tell you the permitted route when quoting.
