Optical windows separate environments while letting light pass, and substrates carry coatings and thin films. This sub-category supplies both in crystalline and glass materials. Barium fluoride windows are listed in many sizes, including 15 x 2 mm, 22 x 0.5 mm, 32 x 3 mm, 35 x 5 mm, 42 x 2 mm, 44.45 x 3.5 mm and 57 x 8 mm, along with a 40 mm diameter BaF2 crystal window and other fluoride and oxide windows.

Barium fluoride transmits from deep UV to around 12 µm in the infrared, and it is also a fast scintillator for radiation detection. It is softer and more sensitive to thermal shock than calcium fluoride, so handle and mount it carefully. When choosing a window, consider wavelength range, thickness for pressure loads, surface flatness and any anti-reflection coating.

  • Fluoride windows for UV and infrared spectroscopy
  • Oxide and glass windows for visible and laser use
  • Coated substrates for thin-film and device work

Windows ship individually wrapped in protective cases. Each order includes material and dimension details, and custom sizes are available.

Optical Windows & Coated Substrates: questions buyers ask

Is barium fluoride affected by water?
Barium fluoride is only slightly soluble in water, so it tolerates normal humidity better than salts such as sodium chloride or potassium bromide. Prolonged contact with water or condensation can still fog the surface. Store windows in a dry place and clean them with dry solvents rather than water.
How thick should an optical window be for a pressure cell?
Thickness depends on the unsupported diameter, pressure difference, material strength and safety factor. Larger diameters and higher pressures need thicker windows. Standard engineering formulas give the minimum thickness. Share the operating pressure, aperture and material, and we can suggest a suitable size from the range.
Why is BaF2 used in radiation detectors?
Barium fluoride has an extremely fast scintillation component, under a nanosecond, which allows precise timing of gamma-ray events. This makes it useful in positron emission and high-energy physics experiments. Crystals for detection need high purity and good optical transmission in the UV.
