Nanomaterials behave differently from their bulk forms because so much of their mass sits at the surface. This sub-category covers metal and alloy nanopowders, oxide nanoparticles, nitride and carbide particles, ready-made dispersions, carbon nanotubes and nanofibres, graphene and fullerenes. Examples include Aluminium nanopowder APS 40 nm, Aluminium oxide nanopowder in α and γ phases, multi-walled carbon nanotubes in NMP dispersion and Fullerene C60 at 99.5%+.

Average particle size (APS) is only part of the picture. Buyers should also look at crystal phase, specific surface area, morphology and whether particles are agglomerated. For dispersions, the solvent, concentration and stabiliser matter as much as the particle. Each listing gives the key parameters, and the COA confirms them for the lot.

Nanopowders are packed in sealed, double-bagged containers to limit dust, and reactive metals are sealed under argon. Handle them in ventilated enclosures. Each lot ships with a COA and SDS.

Nanomaterials: questions buyers ask

How is nanoparticle size measured?
Common methods include transmission electron microscopy for primary particle size, BET surface area to estimate an equivalent diameter, and dynamic light scattering for particles in suspension. Each method measures something slightly different, so results can disagree. Check which method the COA uses before comparing products.
Why are nanopowders often agglomerated on arrival?
Nanoparticles have high surface energy and tend to stick together during drying and storage. Agglomerates can usually be broken by ultrasonication in a suitable liquid with a dispersant. For applications that need well-separated particles, a ready-made dispersion may save time and give more consistent results.
What safety precautions apply to nanomaterials?
Avoid inhaling dust by handling powders in a fume hood or glovebox, and wear gloves and a suitable respirator where advised. Some metal nanopowders are pyrophoric and must be kept under inert gas. Follow the SDS for each material and dispose of waste as hazardous chemical waste.
