Chemical grade

Molecular Biology Grade chemicals

Biochemicals tested for absence of DNase, RNase and protease activity, with low metals, for PCR, cloning and nucleic acid work.

What the grade means

In molecular biology a reagent can be chemically pure and still ruin an experiment. A trace of RNase degrades RNA, metal contaminants inhibit polymerases and protease activity damages enzymes. Molecular biology grade combines a normal purity specification with functional tests for these hazards.

Typical specification points

  • Assay of at least 99 percent, often 99.5 percent.
  • DNase, RNase and protease activity not detected.
  • Low ppm limits for heavy metals or named metals.
  • Clear, colourless solution at a stated concentration.
  • Low UV absorbance at 260 and 280 nm where relevant.

When to choose it

Use this grade for PCR and qPCR buffers, DNA and RNA extraction, electrophoresis, sequencing workflows and enzyme reactions. Typical products are Tris, EDTA, magnesium chloride, guanidine salts, SDS, agarose and sucrose. For general biochemistry or buffer preparation outside nucleic acid work, a standard biochemical grade is usually adequate.

Documentation

Each lot ships with a COA reporting the enzyme activity tests and a GHS SDS. Browse Biochemicals for products.

Questions

About Molecular Biology Grade

Is molecular biology grade water the same as DEPC-treated water?
Not exactly. DEPC treatment inactivates RNases chemically, and the residual DEPC is then destroyed by autoclaving. Molecular biology grade water may be produced by DEPC treatment or by ultrafiltration, so check the method on the COA if it matters.
Should I aliquot molecular biology reagents after opening?
Yes. Splitting stock solutions into single-use aliquots reduces the chance of introducing nucleases with repeated pipetting. Wear gloves and use nuclease-free tips and tubes.
Does this grade test for endotoxin?
Not usually. Endotoxin matters for cell culture and in vivo work and is tested only in grades labelled low endotoxin or cell culture tested. Ask for that grade if endotoxin is a concern.
