Technical Grade chemicals

What the grade means

Technical grade, also called commercial or industrial grade, is the form in which most chemicals are made and traded in bulk. The specification covers what matters for a process, such as main component content, appearance, moisture and one or two key impurities. Trace contaminants are not usually limited, and lot-to-lot variation can be wider than in reagent grades.

Technical does not mean poor. Large-volume chemicals are often above 99 percent pure in this grade.

Typical specification points

Sodium hydroxide flakes might be sold at 97 to 98 percent NaOH, with sodium carbonate at or below 1 percent, sodium chloride at or below 0.5 percent and iron at 10 to 50 ppm.

When to choose it

Choose technical grade for manufacturing, pH control and neutralisation, water and effluent treatment, cleaning in place, metal finishing and the production of other chemicals where the output is purified. It is the economical choice for drums, IBCs and container loads.
