Chemical grade

HPLC Grade chemicals

Chromatography solvents purified and tested for low UV absorbance, low residue, low water and freedom from particles.

What the grade guarantees

An HPLC grade solvent is judged by what it adds to your chromatogram, not only by its assay. Trace aromatics raise UV background, stabilisers create ghost peaks in gradients, non-volatile residue builds up on the column head and particles block frits. The grade controls each of these.

Typical specification points

  • Assay by GC of 99.8 to 99.9 percent or higher.
  • Absorbance limits at several wavelengths, for example acetonitrile at or below 0.02 AU at 200 nm.
  • Water by Karl Fischer, usually 0.02 to 0.05 percent maximum.
  • Residue on evaporation of a few mg/L at most.
  • Filtration through a 0.2 µm membrane.

When to choose it

Use HPLC grade for UV and diode-array methods, sample preparation for those methods and dissolution testing. If you run steep gradients at low wavelength, ask for gradient grade, which is tested with a blank gradient. For mass spectrometry, step up to LC-MS grade.

Documentation

Each lot ships with a COA reporting the tested values, plus a 16-section GHS SDS. Browse the Solvents (HPLC and GC) division for available products.

Questions

About HPLC Grade

Why do I see ghost peaks with a new bottle of solvent?
Ghost peaks usually come from trace organics that concentrate on the column during equilibration and elute during the gradient. Switching to a gradient-tested HPLC grade, keeping bottles capped and avoiding plastic transfer lines normally removes them.
Does HPLC grade water exist?
Yes. HPLC grade water is specified for low TOC, low UV absorbance and low residue. Many laboratories produce their own with a purification system, but bottled water is useful for validation work or when the system is down.
How long does an opened bottle of HPLC acetonitrile stay usable?
There is no fixed rule, but once opened, solvents absorb water and airborne contaminants. Most laboratories set an in-use period of a few weeks to a few months based on their own baseline checks, and always keep the cap closed.
