Rare earth salts provide soluble, reactive forms of the lanthanides for synthesis, catalysis and materials preparation. This sub-category supplies nitrates, acetates, chlorides, bromides, sulphates and ammonium double salts of cerium, lanthanum, europium, ytterbium and others. Examples include Ammonium ceric nitrate (CAN) and Ammonium ceric sulphate in standard and GR grades, Cerium(III) acetate in two grades and Cerium(III) bromide anhydrous at 99.95%.

Ceric ammonium nitrate is a strong one-electron oxidant used to remove PMB protecting groups and to oxidise alcohols and aromatics. Ceric sulphate solutions are standard oxidants in cerimetric titrations. Anhydrous lanthanide halides are used in organometallic chemistry and scintillator crystals, so they must be kept rigorously dry. Lanthanide triflates and nitrates catalyse many organic reactions under mild conditions.

Hydrated salts ship in sealed bottles, while anhydrous halides are packed under argon. Each lot comes with a COA reporting purity on a rare earth basis and an SDS. Oxidising salts travel under dangerous-goods rules.

Rare Earth Salts & Compounds: questions buyers ask

How is ceric ammonium nitrate used in synthesis?
CAN removes para-methoxybenzyl and similar protecting groups by oxidation, oxidises benzylic alcohols and hydroquinones, and initiates radical additions. It is used in aqueous acetonitrile at mild temperatures. As a strong oxidiser, it should be kept away from organic waste and combustible materials during storage.
Why must anhydrous cerium bromide be kept so dry?
Anhydrous lanthanide halides absorb water rapidly, forming hydrates and oxyhalides that spoil their use in organometallic synthesis and crystal growth. Cerium bromide is also a scintillator material whose performance depends on purity. Store it in a glovebox or under argon and open only in dry conditions.
What is cerimetry?
Cerimetry is a redox titration method using standard cerium(IV) sulphate solution as the oxidant. Cerium(IV) is stable in sulphuric acid, does not oxidise chloride easily, and gives a clear colour change with ferroin indicator. It is used in pharmacopoeial assays of iron salts and other reducing substances.
