Amino acids appear in almost every area of life science, from cell nutrition and protein engineering to chiral synthesis and metabolic research. This sub-category covers the standard L-amino acids, their less common D-enantiomers and a range of modified derivatives. Examples include D-Alanine 99%, D-Arginine ≥98%, D-Cysteine 99%, 5-Hydroxy-DL-tryptophan 99% and 4-Amino butyric acid (GABA).

The first check is stereochemistry. L, D and DL forms behave very differently in biological systems, and a racemic material is not interchangeable with a single enantiomer. Next come optical rotation, heavy metal limits, and whether a salt or hydrate is supplied. For media preparation, buyers often also look for cell culture testing or pharmacopoeial grade documentation where the grade exists.

Packs range from a few grams for research to multi-kilogram drums for media and feed formulations. Most amino acids are stable solids that ship at ambient temperature with the rest of an order. Lot COAs report assay, specific rotation and loss on drying.

Amino Acids & Derivatives: questions buyers ask

Why would a researcher buy a D-amino acid?
D-amino acids are used to build protease-resistant peptides, to study bacterial cell walls, and as chiral building blocks in drug synthesis. Some, such as D-serine, also have signalling roles in the nervous system. They are not normally interchangeable with the L-form in protein synthesis or cell culture.
How is the optical purity of an amino acid confirmed?
Specific optical rotation is the routine check, measured at a stated concentration, solvent and temperature. For tighter control, chiral HPLC can quantify the minor enantiomer directly. The COA lists the rotation found for the lot, which you can compare with the literature value for the pure enantiomer.
Do amino acids need special storage?
Most are stable at room temperature when kept dry and closed. Cysteine and tryptophan are more sensitive and should be protected from air, light and moisture to slow oxidation. Hydrochloride salts are usually more stable than free bases. Store according to the label and reseal containers promptly after use.
