Reliable growth starts with consistent media ingredients. This sub-category lists the base materials used to prepare culture media in food, pharma, water and clinical microbiology labs. Agars include Agar-agar powder (Noble), Agar-agar powder No.1 for bacteriology and shredded agar, and the nutrient range covers Beef extract powder, beef extract paste and peptones.

Agar is chosen mainly on gel strength, clarity and the level of inhibitory impurities. Noble agar is washed to remove pigments and salts, so it suits immunodiffusion and demanding cultures. Bacteriological agar is the everyday choice for plates. Extracts and peptones vary in nitrogen content and growth support, which is why labs often run growth promotion tests on each new lot.

Media components are hygroscopic, so they ship in sealed containers with desiccant where needed. Store them cool and dry and close containers immediately after use. Packs range from 100 g to bulk sacks for media manufacturers, each with a COA showing gel strength, moisture and pH as relevant.

Microbiology Culture Media & Agars: questions buyers ask

What is gel strength and why does it vary between agars?
Gel strength is the force needed to break a standard agar gel, usually stated in g/cm² for a 1.5% gel. It depends on the seaweed source and processing. Higher gel strength allows lower agar concentrations, while very soft gels suit motility tests. Adjust your recipe if a new lot has a different gel strength.
Should I run growth promotion tests on new media ingredients?
Yes. Pharmacopoeial and accreditation standards expect labs to confirm that each lot of prepared medium supports the target organisms and, for selective media, inhibits others. Testing new lots of agar, peptone and extract against reference strains catches variability before it affects results.
How long can dehydrated media components be stored?
Sealed containers kept cool and dry usually last several years, and the expiry or retest date appears on the label and COA. Once opened, moisture uptake causes clumping and can reduce performance. Reclose immediately, store away from humidity, and discard material that has caked or changed colour.
