Detergents break membranes, solubilise proteins and keep hydrophobic molecules in solution. Picking the wrong one can denature the protein you want to keep. This sub-category covers non-ionic polyoxyethylene ethers such as Brij 30 and Brij 35, zwitterionic sulfobetaines including 3-(Hexadecyldimethylammonio)propanesulfonate, and cationic quaternary compounds such as Benzalkonium chloride and Benzethonium chloride 99%.

The key properties are the critical micelle concentration (CMC), the aggregation number and the charge. Non-ionic detergents are gentle and preserve protein activity. Zwitterionic detergents solubilise more strongly while keeping native charge. Cationic detergents are antimicrobial and are used more in formulation than in protein work. Dialysable detergents with high CMC are easier to remove afterwards.

Detergents are supplied as solids, waxes or concentrated liquids in sealed bottles, from 25 g to bulk packs. Each lot includes a COA. For formulations requiring a pharmacopoeial grade, we can offer documentation where the grade exists.

Biological Detergents & Surfactants: questions buyers ask

How do I choose a detergent for membrane protein extraction?
Start with a mild non-ionic detergent such as a Brij or a maltoside, used above its CMC, and check whether activity is kept. If solubilisation is poor, try a zwitterionic sulfobetaine. Screening a few detergents at small scale is normal, because the best choice depends on the protein and its lipid environment.
What is the critical micelle concentration and why does it matter?
The CMC is the concentration above which detergent molecules assemble into micelles. Solubilisation happens above it. Detergents with a high CMC are removed easily by dialysis, while those with a low CMC stay bound and need other methods. The CMC also guides how much detergent to add.
Can benzalkonium chloride be used in protein work?
It is rarely used for protein purification because, as a cationic detergent, it binds strongly and often denatures proteins. Its main uses are as a preservative and disinfectant and in phase transfer chemistry. For lysis and solubilisation, non-ionic or zwitterionic detergents give better results.
