Natural products remain a major source of bioactive chemistry, and many are studied as nutraceuticals, analytical markers and drug leads. This sub-category lists purified phytochemicals, vitamins and related compounds. Examples include (L)-Tetrahydropalmatine ≥98%, 1-Deoxynojirimycin ≥95% from mulberry, (4S)-4-Hydroxy-L-isoleucine from fenugreek, (±)-L-Alliin from garlic and 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzoic acid (gallic acid) at ≥99% by HPLC.

Purity and identity are the two big questions, because extracts can contain closely related compounds that co-elute in simple tests. Check HPLC purity and, for chiral natural products, the stated stereochemistry. If the compound will serve as a quantitative marker in herbal analysis, ask whether a higher purity or an assigned content value is available.

Products are supplied in milligram and gram packs, protected from light and moisture. Many polyphenols oxidise in air, so store them cold and sealed. Each lot comes with a COA showing purity and identification method.

Natural Products, Vitamins & Phytochemicals: questions buyers ask

Can these compounds be used as markers for herbal product testing?
Many are used as markers in HPLC fingerprinting and assay of herbal products. For quantitative work, use a material with a stated purity or content, and verify its identity with your own method. Where a pharmacopoeia names an official reference for the marker, check whether your regulator requires it.
Why do natural product purities vary between lots?
Natural compounds are isolated from plant material that varies with species, season and region, and closely related compounds are hard to separate completely. Purification yields and residual solvents differ by lot as a result. The COA gives the values for the lot supplied, which should guide how you use it.
How should polyphenols such as gallic acid be stored?
Keep them in tightly closed, light-resistant containers in a cool, dry place. Polyphenols oxidise in air and light, often turning darker. Solutions are less stable than solids, so prepare them fresh or store frozen in aliquots. Check appearance before use and discard discoloured material in critical assays.
