The carbonyl group is one of the most versatile handles in organic synthesis, taking part in condensations, additions, reductions and ring formations. This sub-category supplies aldehydes and ketones of many kinds. Examples include 1,3-Cyclohexanedione, 1,3-Indandione, 1,4-Cyclohexanedione monoethylene acetal and the diaryl ketone (5-Bromo-2-chlorophenyl)(4-ethoxyphenyl)methanone, a dapagliflozin intermediate.

Aldehydes oxidise in air to carboxylic acids, so their purity can change during storage, and some are supplied with stabilisers. Cyclic 1,3-diones are acidic and exist partly as enols, which affects their reactivity in Michael and Knoevenagel reactions. Mono-protected diones, such as the ethylene acetal, let you react one carbonyl while the other is masked. Check the COA for free dione content before selective work.

Aldehydes & Ketones: questions buyers ask

How can I limit oxidation of aldehydes in storage?

Store aldehydes cold, in full containers under nitrogen or argon, away from light. Air oxidation forms the corresponding carboxylic acid, which can poison some reactions. For sensitive work, check purity by NMR or GC before use, and wash out acid with a mild base or distil if needed.

Why use a mono-protected cyclohexanedione?

1,4-Cyclohexanedione monoethylene acetal has one ketone masked as an acetal, so only the free ketone reacts. This allows selective additions, olefinations or reductive aminations at one position. The acetal is removed afterwards under mild acid to reveal the second ketone for further steps.

Are diaryl ketones like the dapagliflozin intermediate available in bulk?
