Sulphur compounds cover a wide span of oxidation states and uses, from smelly thiols to stable sulphonic acids. This sub-category lists thiols, sulphides, sulphonic acids and their salts, sulphonyl chlorides and sulphonate esters. Examples include (±)-Camphor-10-sulphonic acid for resolutions, (2S)-(+)-Glycidyl tosylate as a chiral epoxide synthon, 1,2-Naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid sodium salt for amino acid detection, and 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid in GR grade.

Thiols oxidise readily to disulphides, so they are stored under inert gas, and their odour calls for good ventilation. Sulphonic acids are strong, often hygroscopic acids used as catalysts and resolving agents. Sulphonate salts in HPLC and GR grades serve as analytical reagents with low background, and disodium ethanedisulphonate is used as an HPLC additive.

  • Chiral sulphonic acids for salt resolution
  • Tosylates and sulphonyl chlorides as activating groups
  • Naphthol sulphonic acids for colorimetric analysis

Each lot ships with a COA and SDS, sealed against moisture and odour.

Sulfur Compounds (Thiols, Sulfides, Sulfonates): questions buyers ask

How is camphorsulphonic acid used in chiral resolution?
Enantiopure camphor-10-sulphonic acid forms diastereomeric salts with racemic amines. These salts differ in solubility, so one crystallises preferentially and can be separated. The racemic acid listed here is useful as a strong organic acid catalyst and as a dopant in conducting polymers such as polyaniline.
What is 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid used for?
It is the reducing agent in the classical molybdenum blue method for phosphate determination, as described in several standard methods. The reagent reduces phosphomolybdic acid to a blue complex measured by spectrophotometry. GR grade gives lower blanks and more reliable calibration.
How can I limit thiol odour and oxidation in the lab?
Handle thiols in a fume cupboard, keep containers sealed under nitrogen and store them cool. Bleach solution oxidises spills and glassware residues to odourless sulphonates. Adding a reducing agent such as TCEP to reactions keeps thiols from forming disulphides during use.
