What is a stabilised Wittig ylide?
A stabilised ylide, such as (carbethoxymethylene)triphenylphosphorane, carries an electron-withdrawing group next to the carbanion. This makes it air stable and easy to handle, and it reacts with aldehydes to give mainly E-alkenes. Unstabilised ylides are more reactive, must be made in situ and tend to give Z-alkenes.
What is etidronate tetrasodium used for?
Etidronate is a bisphosphonate that binds metal ions strongly. Its sodium salts are used as scale inhibitors in water treatment, as chelating agents in detergents and cosmetics, and in research on bone mineral binding. The tetrasodium salt dissolves readily in water to give an alkaline solution.
How should rhodium carbonyl complexes be stored?
Store (acetylacetonato)dicarbonylrhodium(I) cold, in the dark and under inert gas. It slowly loses carbon monoxide and decomposes in air and light. Handle it in a fume cupboard, as carbonyl release is possible. It is used as a precursor for hydroformylation catalysts and in organometallic research.
