Amide and urea bonds are among the most common links in drug molecules, and carbamates appear in pesticides, protecting groups and polymers. This sub-category supplies building blocks containing these groups. Products include 1,3-Diphenylurea, 2,2,2-Trifluoroacetamide, 2,2-Diethoxyacetamide, 2,4-Dihydroxybenzamide, 1-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylurea (the urea by-product of EDC) and the carbamate (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-benzodioxol-4-yl) N-prop-2-ynylcarbamate.

Amides are generally stable and easy to handle, which makes them good intermediates for further reactions such as dehydration to nitriles, Hofmann rearrangement or reduction to amines. Ureas serve as hydrogen-bond donors in organocatalysis and supramolecular chemistry. Some carbamates are biologically active, so check SDS hazard information before handling. Fluorinated amides such as trifluoroacetamide also serve as ammonia equivalents in coupling chemistry.

Most items are stable solids shipped at ambient temperature in gram to kilogram packs. Each lot includes a COA and SDS. Paste a list of CAS numbers into the Bulk CAS lookup to check availability across this group quickly.

Amides, Ureas & Carbamates: questions buyers ask

Why is the EDC urea by-product sold as a standard?
When EDC is used for amide coupling it forms 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylurea as a by-product. Pharmaceutical analysts need a reference sample of this urea to show it is removed from the final product and to identify it in chromatograms. It is also useful in reaction monitoring.
How can amides be converted into other functional groups?
Primary amides can be dehydrated to nitriles, rearranged to amines with one fewer carbon through the Hofmann reaction, or reduced to amines with strong hydride reagents. Secondary and tertiary amides can be reduced to amines or converted to ketones via Weinreb-type chemistry. These routes make amides useful intermediates.
Are carbamate compounds hazardous to handle?
Some carbamates inhibit acetylcholinesterase and are toxic, while others are fairly benign protecting groups. Hazard depends on the structure. Read the SDS for each compound, use gloves and a fume cupboard when handling powders, and store them according to the label.
