Carboxylic acids are everywhere in synthesis, as coupling partners, resolving agents, linkers and ligands. This sub-category spans simple and complex acids and their salts. Examples include (+)-2,3-Dibenzoyl-D-tartaric acid, a classic resolving agent, (S)-(−)-3-Cyclohexenecarboxylic acid, 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid used in crosslinking, (±)-2-Hydroxysuccinic acid (malic acid) and 1,2-Phenylenediacetic acid.

Buyers check purity, water content and whether the acid is supplied free or as a salt. For chiral acids, optical rotation or enantiomeric excess is essential, especially when the acid is used to resolve racemic amines. Polycarboxylic acids are chosen by spacing and rigidity when building metal-organic frameworks or polymers. Hydrates and anhydrous forms are listed separately where both exist.

Most acids are stable solids that ship at ambient temperature. Each lot comes with a COA and SDS, and kilogram quantities are available for many items. Compare similar acids with the product compare tool when choosing between isomers.

Carboxylic Acids & Salts: questions buyers ask

How does dibenzoyl tartaric acid resolve racemic amines?
It reacts with a racemic amine to form two diastereomeric salts that differ in solubility. One salt crystallises preferentially from a chosen solvent, and filtering it separates the enantiomers. The amine is then freed with base. Solvent, stoichiometry and temperature are adjusted to give the best yield and purity.
What is 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid used for?
Its four acid groups form ester crosslinks with hydroxyl groups, which is why it has been used as a formaldehyde-free crosslinker for cotton to give wrinkle resistance. It is also used in polymer and coordination chemistry, where its multiple binding sites link metal centres.
Should I buy the acid or its salt?
Free acids are usually preferred for coupling and esterification. Salts dissolve better in water and are easier to handle for some acids that are liquids, unstable or hygroscopic in free form. Choose based on your reaction conditions, and correct weighed amounts for the counter-ion when switching between forms.
